SAM, short for sample, is the file format generally used for MegaZeux sound effects before the SDL port's release.
Anatomy of a SAM
The SAM format used for MegaZeux is actually nothing more than raw waveform data, saved in 8-bit signed format, with only one channel (monoaural). The files have no header data, and thus do not store any information on what frequency the sound is played at. The frequency the sound is played at is decided by MegaZeux via the Robotic commands play or sam.
The SAM format has since been abandoned since the SDL port. While port versions from 2.90d natively load SAM files, they are considered deprecated in favor of OGG or WAV.
