Good doaz, would doaz again

Aaaaannnd the semi-annual Day of Zeux rules discussion. Let's keep it to spoilers tags so it doesn't garbage up the thread.

• DQ rules - The theme DQ doesn't do its job when someone submits something that's incomplete or against the spirit of competition (for example, the Summer 2010 DoZ, with asiekierka's and coda's submissions). The Contempt of Competition disqualification should be made an official disqualification method if it isn't already, and the theme DQ should be eliminated; anything that sufficiently fails the theme requirements would be considered in Contempt of Competition, regardless of the scoresheet used or the level of completion of the game. Likewise, an extremely incomplete game (like "255 nano robotz") might be voted for Contempt of Competition if it was clear that not much work was put into it. This could either be a judge vote, the final call of the host, or both. Honestly, people have been confused for years as to exactly what theme score constitutes a disqualification, assuming that a 5 would pass when it really doesn't. Let's decouple it so we have more basis to deal with the edge cases.
  
• Category descriptions - Insidious mentioned having issues with the relative lighthearted/whimsical nature of the category descriptions in favor of something more official and precise.
  
• Scoresheets - I don't feel any particular way about whether the scoresheets themselves need to be overhauled at this point, but alternate methods have been suggested and I wouldn't mind hearing some out.
  
• Edit: Judges - The number of judges has varied a lot, and this time the score return period was ridiculous due to nobody's fault in particular, so this should be constrained a bit more. We should always have at least 4 judges, and no "backup" judges. The scoresheets that are finished within the specified period will always be released on the deadline, and the deadline will be explicitly defined in UTC. I'm willing to wait 2 weeks for scores but I'm not willing to wait another 2 weeks for the backup judge that ends up not submitting a sheet anyway. The only circumstance in which a backup judge should be allowed is if no judges (0) submit sheets within the deadline period, which should never happen at all because the host almost always doubles as a judge. Judges dropping out is fine; life happens. We've been kind of running without the buffer of extra judges that's supposed to counter that, though, and we need to stop that.

edit: also, good job re: the judging sheets, these are good judging sheets, I just thought you'd like to hear that! usually I complain but these are A-OK sheets

Even though he is my bitter rival, I would like to issue an appeal challenging 2 the charges against giel.

Regarding "contempt of competition": I would like to know what the justification for this charge is, it's not obvious what behavior provoked the charge.

Regarding "Plagiarism": I am concerned that because his entry acknowledges at least some of the allegedly plagiarized material as not original, it actually hasn't plagiarized them. Given that providing this information seems to sabotage any possible serious attempt one could have to plagiarize any material, it seems unreasonable to assume this behavior can be construed to be anything else but a fair use parody. Specifically, it seems giel's entry was parodying giel's habitual plagiarism, and therefore probably can't be described fairly as plagiarism.

I provide no challenge to the charge that giel's entry used content created outside the DoZ period, and that he should be disqualified for that.

I should further volunteer, as one of the people responsible for the "contempt of competition" rule, when we made that rule what we were actually trying to establish was a "contempt of the competition" rule, ("the competition" being a reference to, "the DoZ").

The purpose of the rule was to punish extreme unsporting behavior such as sabotaging other peoples entries, trying to damage people's megazeux directories and so on, which might not actually be directly tied to a contestants submission. (see asie's attempt to submit fake patches for other people's entries).

The rule was not intended to punish people for either not being competitive, or as redundant "don't break the rules" rule. If some one breaks a rule like using material from outside the DoZ period, DQ them for that, if their game is awful or incomplete, score it appropriately. In the case of an incomplete or poor entry, the final score is precisely where the punishment should occur.

Parody or not, he didn't acknowledge all of it. Even if we accept the Cans 3, Chrono Wars and Univers! boards as parody, the use of e.g. the Engine 2 font doesn't contribute it and besides, it is never acknowledged. Hence it still counts as plagiarism.

That said, plagiarism is not a DQ-able offense in a DoZ. Using material created outside the DoZ is and using stuff created by someone else during the DoZ who isn't in your team is, but there is nothing in the rules about plagiarism.

I think it's more reasonable to assume the omissions are accidentally not listed than it is to assume giel deliberately tried to trick everyone into believing the content not listed was original in contrast to the specifically listed items. I think if someones goal is to steal another's work, one of the worst strategies they could employ is to first remind everyone about plagiarism.

He was primarily disqualified for the rule of bringing in material created outside of the DoZ. The other two are more of addenda. Regarding plagiarism, Lancer has said most of what I wanted to say. I was not aware Plagiarism is not in and of itself a DQable offense in a DoZ. I think it should be something that is at least noted when somebody's use of material outside of the DoZ is specifically plagiarism in nature, and it is in this spirit that Plagiarism was added as an addenda to his disqualification.

Regarding contempt of competition, I may have misused this particular disqualification rule. I will not say further in an attempt to avoid causing further problems with Giel and otherwise, suffice to say I felt that certain actions impeded my ability to properly close out the competition.

I will, for now, remove that from the top post.

The plagiarism still stands.
