So, we kind of missed the summer DoZ completely this year. I'm thinking of hosting a winter one this January but given the low amount of buzz lately I'm going to try to judge how many participants we would actually have before I commit to doing so. So: This poll. Please only choose yes if you actually seriously intend on participating and submitting a game.

I figured I'd volunteer because nobody else has stepped forward but I do have other obligations so if there's not a lot of interest I can't really afford to spend time on it.

<@Tixus> Anyway, I set the year to 1988 for some reason.
<@Tixus> And set the microwave to run for a minute and 28 seconds.
<@Tixus> But it failed to send me back in time, and I was disappointed.
<Insidious> Tixus accidentally microwaved the 80s

It might be fun one day, but I suspect my outside commitments would keep me from being able to participate. With family responsibilities I can't devote more than two hours or so. I think that precludes me, sadly. Hope you can make it come together though, these contests seem to breed a lot of creativity and ingenuity.
Currently working on Servo for MegaZeux, I hope to complete it by the middle of 2015? Who knows...

Graham, maybe you could sign up to JUDGE THINGS if your commitments preclude participation? Depending on the number of entries you might just have to donate your gaming/MZXing time for a week to do it, but it wouldn't be the same problematic intense time commitment all at once.

((The same suggestion goes to Lancer if commitments force him not to partake of competition itself.))

I partook last time and would like to do so again, myself.

That sounds like it might work, KKairos, and it would be fun to help in some way. Does judging usually happen over a few days? What will I need to do to judge the games? Just play each one and give my personal opinion? Or is there specific judging criteria?

As far as I can recall, There are several categories like technique, graphics, gameplay, story, sound, etc. you'll get to look at and judge what you think of them, and depending on the genre or type of game some of those categories weigh more than others for the final result.
I have never attended a DoZ myself, so I'm not entirely sure. Not really sure if I'll participate this time, because the date/time never really works out for me as I'm still attending school.

Maybe if Insidious proposes a possible date/time sometime soon, I might consider if it works out.

Maybe it could be done while most students are on winter break.

fwiw, I'm looking for at least about 10 or 11 potential participants before I commit to hosting this and start polling for dates.

Count me potentially committed. Winter's actually one of the best times for DoZ for me, even on Fridays now, because it sounds like it'll be (somewhat) slower at work.

I'LL BE A FILLER ENTRANT
<Nadir> mzxers don't make GAMES, usually
<phthalocyanine> they make experiences.
<Nadir> demos, more like
<Nadir> a glimpse into what could have been if mzx wasn't such a bore to work with
<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair
<Nadir> i would have made mzx games if it was capable of running on more than 20 computers worldwide in 1998
<Nadir> >:D

<%Alice> functor
<%nooodl> i hear C++ has a thing called functors and they're completely different from Haskell functors...
<rorirover> the result is the most horrid thing in C++, it's basically black magic and it transforms any code you're writing into some eldritch monstrosity

I haven't voted yet, can I vote yes to be a judge, or is the poll only for participants?

Alright, we've got 12 votes (counting CJA who wasn't able to vote for some reason). That's enough for me. I'm going to put up a poll with all the weekends in January now. Please vote in this next poll when it comes up :(
