I can suggest to be able to change the appearances for:
  • Web
  • Thick Web
  • Bullet Gun
  • Spinning Gun
  • Missile Gun
  • Missile
  • thin lines
  • thick lines

These can already be changed at run time (and this is documented), but they are not currently exposed in the editor. (For the ones that have a special display when set to character zero, it can display a asterisk in the "Edit Chars" menu, like it already displays a question mark when character 255 is selected for the ones that will use the parameter in that case.)

Updating status to: Approved
Updating severity to: 1 - Low
Updating version to: 2.94

Thin lines, thick lines, thin arrows, thick arrows, and the Lit Bomb animation should be doable—I assume this is most of what you want?

I'm not sure exactly how these should be exposed to the user. Just sticking them in the current UI at 128-159 etc. would be disruptive and would paginate badly, i.e. both sets of lines would cross page boundaries when ideally neither should. I suspect the answer is manually paginating the ID chars by category and having "Edit Chars" open a dialog with buttons to each category.

I'm not feeling particularly inclined to add UI fields for the IDs with special animations or with default ID chars of 255, but since these dialogs would be getting an overhaul, it might be possible to stick them in an "advanced" submenu with a warning message.

Putting this off until 2.94X so I have some more time to think about it, and since there's already too much to get done in 2.93X.

I did not mean to add UI fields into the "Edit Chars" menu for ones having default char 255, since I think they are not useful anyways (maybe with the possible exception of moving walls). Nor do I expect it to be useful for all IDs with special animations, although the ones I listed do seem potentially useful.

About pagination you are probably right though, and you can do what you suggested to improve the UI (although possibly a configuration setting could be made available to restore the old UI for people who don't need the new features; this might also help with issue 674).

You might have misinterpreted the part of my message that you quoted. What I was describing is the existing behaviour (which is good), and that by an analogy, if the things that I listed are added into this menu (or any others that have a special display when char 0 is selected, if it is decided to be useful to add any), it can display an asterisk in place of char 0 for those IDs, in addition to the question mark that is currently displayed in place of char 255.

I quoted it separately because, while I assumed from the rest of the post you were requesting access to 128-159 and 250-257, that latter part implied to me that you might also mean adding UI fields in the 0-127 range for IDs with special animations (which is much less useful). Thanks for the clarification. If the latter were added, I agree that doing this would be a good idea to make it obvious that those IDs have special handling for char 0.
