DarkMatt noted on the MZX Discord that it might be useful to check blocked status at an exact position instead of north/south/east/west of an exact position. This could be achieved if we supported REL COUNTERS/IF BLOCKED IDLE... since the blocked state isn't dependent on the direction of the check, only the flags of the thing at the position. This method seems a little hacky but I don't think there is a better option at the moment.
This may have to be compatibility checked, which would make it a 2.92 feature at earliest.

REL COL OBJECT PAR might be a good thing to try. It would allow 'hiding' floor tiles and such since unfortunately we can't program sensors and furthermore, robots and stuff push them.
Maybe expanding sensors to be more than just a dumb robot that reports PUSHED and what not could help. Make sensors an alternate floor, for instance...I'm not sure how that would break anything...it would seem overall that MZX has exactly two layers: things that move or have code sit on things that don't move and don't have code. So possibly and I suspect this is why robots push sensors...they're relegated to the same internal 'layer'.
But it would help with solving the original feature request in a way that could make possible some other interesting solutions for folks that aren't able to do the magical wizardry of MODE 7 demos.
