Freakish Town I & II is a set of action/adventure games that take place in, well, Freakish Town. These games have some flaws, but overall I like them. Probably my favorite of the Megazeux games from the AOL archive.

Both take place on a set of three boards: a ground, upper story and basement on separate boards. Basically, it's like a single multi-tier map.

There are puzzles to solve, but nothing as inane or frustrating as in lower-rated Megazeux puzzle games. Both of these games together will probably take about 25-30 minutes to solve the first time.

You fight both built-in enemies and bosses in each game. The built-in combat mechanics are implemented well, with a variety of enemy types. Using the built-in bear enemy in single-width passages is a cool idea that I hadn't considered before, for example. It's a little too easy, though.

Unfortunately there are some areas where monsters can cram around a teleporter and make you take unavoidable damage. This isn't the worst thing though, since you won't be losing many lives anyway.

The bosses aren't difficult at all if you stock up on ammo. They're fights against enemies that mostly fire bullets in a small space. They'll hit you a few times, and are hard to hit because they move very erratically.

You might run out of ammo during the fight, and if that happens you're screwed. If you fought the built-ins without taking much damage you can just pin the boss against the wall and fire until it dies. You're less likely to run out of ammo that way, anyway.

But I'll say this, don't stock up on ammo for the bosses until you buy the mandatory items. You CAN run out of coins and get stuck forever, and have to restart the game. On the other hand, your initial weapon gives you more than enough ammo to handle the built-ins. But if you encounter a boss BEFORE stocking up on ammo, you might be screwed. Either way there's a small chance you'll be forced to restart the game at least once.

Most importantly, in Freakish Town II you'll want to start holding the down arrow key before you close the opening text. You're supposed to be able to kick the rock below the player, but there is NO delay on Assalone before he throws you into the pit. I don't know if this was intentional, but it's pretty horrible until you figure that out.

This would be a two-star game, except the thing is really nicely built. You have a single level with multiple floors which is connected in interesting ways, and competently-planned battles against built-in enemies.

Being able to trap yourself into an unwinnable game is something that didn't age well, but it won't happen if you use at least half of your brain while playing.
