Awakened Bloodshed is one of those games that pack a punch but are too short for you to truly enjoy it. Of course, it's short because understandably, it's a demo. Anyway, the story goes that you're a modern-era grave keeper who suddenly finds that the town has been zombified. With sword in hand, you set forth to attempt to escape the madness and uncover the truth behind the zombies.

This game scores well in my opinion because it manages to create a dark, tense atmosphere. The overall graphics are drawn mostly in shades of gray to make things appear foreboding. A deliciously creepy music score lends a sense of unease for the player as he or she navigates through the zombie-ridden town. Sound effects are on the minimal side but they have a tendency to pop out at inopportune moments making for some awesome scares: such examples include the roar of a zombie when it is awakened. When the gate opened in a loud clang to reveal dozens of the undead I jumped out of my seat!

Gameplay is mostly about exploration but as the zombies move towards you in droves, you will have to kill them to move along, so some action is involved. You have two attacks with your sword: a quick stab and a slower swinging attack. Zombies take a few hits to go down and you have to be close to attack, but the strange thing is that even when they are right next to you, they won't actually harm you unless you reach out and touch them. You can be surrounded by them but nothing will happen to you. The zombie AI obviously needs working on, but this is forgivable as there is room for improvement in a demo like this.

There are supposedly a few extensive areas to check out, but they aren't complete here. But it's cool to know that there is a tavern, an inn, and a guard tower for future exploration. Once you get to the church, the demo ends.

This being a demo, there isn't much else that I can say about the game but it is pretty good. The creator of the game claims that what you see in the demo is merely 15% of what the full version has to offer, so if it is ever coming out, I sure hope I wouldn't be disappointed. It's still sad that the demo is so short, but it's good while it lasts.
