Back when MZX still ran in DOS and used the BWSB sound library, we were pretty limited in what could be done with sound, as SAM channels were extremely limited and music formats couldn't be any more advanced than what the GDM could do (which was slightly less than S3M in terms of capabilities).

So in 2002, Apage43 made the ZSE, an "external" sound engine that could be integrated into a game. Basically, by having the player run ZSE before MegaZeux and then having the game send commands to ZSE via file access, authors could harness the included FMOD DLL to do things with the sound engine that MegaZeux did not natively allow (such as MP3 support).

Nowadays, though, since MegaZeux now runs natively in most 32 and 64-bit operating systems with an improved sound engine, this is effectively reduced to historical interest, especially considering that no games actually used it.
