Barbarians is a bizarre hybrid of adventure, classic-style Megazeux and RPG formats.

You start the game with a hammer weapon. All this hammer does is make the combat segments more difficult, since you can only launch one at a time. For the first several boards it's all inane puzzles and classic Megazeux combat using the hammer.

The second half of the game is a rudimentary JRPG! Your only options are attack and run, but the run command is actually useful given the low amount of coins and health restoration items. Given that this is a game from the mid-1990s AOL era, when few people were attempting JRPGs in Megazeux, this is pretty impressive.

This is barely a two-star game, but it is free of fatal bugs and takes at least 20 minutes on the first playthrough! Bad, but not extremely bad. Worth checking out to see what the high-end Megazeux games were like back in 1995.

Worth mentioning that this game expects the Caverns music to be present in its folder and that to beat the goblin boss without getting immediately killed in one hit, you have to edit it and change several "ANYDIR"s to "RANDANY"s so its Fire weakness works properly. Not worth playing, even if you wanted to see what MegaZeux games were like back in 1995. The only reason I bothered was because I already downloaded it (planned to review it in 2011? Maxim beat me? Who knows).
