Lore of Agabuu would have been an extremely interesting MZX game had it been completed.

It's a bog-standard MZX RPG, but surprisingly well balanced for being a bog-standard MZX RPG. There's no status menu, no way to use items outside of battle, and no way at all to determine what equipment you have short of trying to buy it again (and failing if you have it already, or have stronger equipment). Yeah, so everything is done through shops and the menu-based combat engine. While it doesn't APPEAR to be put together very carefully, the whole thing is surprisingly bug-free. I think I only got stuck once while going through a passage before the screen faded in after restoring the party.

Unfortunately, after you get to Agabuu you can't advance any further! That's as far as the author got in making the game. You can explore one battle board in Agabuu, and that's it. What a shame, I was actually having fun with the game, as weird and simplistic as it was.

The backgrounds are ugly, the menus are ugly (and inconsistent), and the tiles are ugly. As are the colors, in many places. This is just from bad design choices--there are ways of achieving what the author was apparently aiming for, without making it look horrible. The bad graphics are a bit off-putting but nothing that ruins the experience.

The sounds work well enough, even if they don't fit the game perfectly. There's a sufficient number of them even if they are inconsistently-themed, I would say. Music is... for the most part, it's all Square RPG music. Yawn.

The plot is obviously self-insertion of the author and his friends in an apocalyptic world. Dialogue and expository text is pretty well-done though.

I would recommend playing this thing at least once. It's interesting and even sort of fun. Overall, 2 stars. I'd have given it 3 or even 4 if it were complete. What a shame.
