Back in the day I was entertained by this game. Lots of people were. This game was one of the first that offered some sense of completion even in the demo, though today the remix is by far the better version (unlike Weirdness's SE).
Luke reportedly got a good number of registrations for this game (it was shareware for a good number of years - he made Engine freeware to hype its sequel). It's understandable, as the demo's quality was pretty good for the time and fairly long to boot. I give four stars of five to this solid adventure, especially for the nostalgia... though if you were around when only the shareware was downloadable, expect to feel incredibly jaded playing through this.
Those looking for just the game should get the full version or the remix.

I played this demo when I was like 7 or 8 and my older brother was over my shoulder explaining to me that one has to actually use the party menu to progress... when I got stuck at the castle gate before switching to Kane. This is one of the games that got me started on MegaZeux and really introduced me to the concept of MegaZeux games as a whole, and having to do more than move and shoot and touch everything that doesn't look like an enemy. Engine looks like a game that blends in standard built-ins with more advanced design, really setting the pace for what MegaZeux games might have looked like if this had ever become a standard for MegaZeux game design.
At time of writing, I just finished the demo-- twice; the original version has a door that doesn't go anywhere at the start of the lava caves... In the updated demo, I only noticed one bug in the whole game-- the passage leading to the throne room at Viera Castle can be exited from the wrong side, though it doesn't break anything.
Once one's played it before, it's really only about an hour of playtime, including cutscenes... at least, if, like me, you like to run fast and read fast. The music in Fantasy Forest almost perfectly matched the pace I was going at blazing through it the first of the two playthroughs. It would have been good if the game's puzzles could be 'reset' and started over instead of requiring the player to load from saved game... and if the 'barrel ride' would have the player lose some health and go back to the start on missed jumps instead of just draining health to game-over... only things about the gameplay I would have changed. Despite the game's primary focus on being story-driven, the action and puzzle elements show through and make up the meat of the experience.
