You'll probably either really like it or really hate this game. Seriously, Goldenhog is like the Beavis and Butthead of Megazeux. I really liked it, but for a few reasons I can't give it more than three stars...

I'll say this: there's a lot to this game. There's an inventory system, but most of the items seem to be red herrings--or have some use I haven't figured out. Yeah, there are a lot of things you can do, but don't have to do in order to beat the game.

You find stashes of money in some places, and can use them in a lot of places--but a lot of THOSE are red herrings that don't do anything. You can waste all of your coins that way, but sometimes buying something will get you access to a new area. Still, you can win even without buying anything.

There are several endings, each of which might abruptly end the game--so you might want to save if you want to find as many of them as possible quickly.

So, the game is like a sandbox: most of the challenge is being able to separate the red herrings from the actual objectives. You can end the game in minutes, or search around for hours. The first time you play it, if you want to enjoy it just try and do as much as possible.

The graphics are simple, but tastefully designed. Few of the areas in the game are outright ugly, and some were even a bit impressive to me despite their crudeness. As far as the music, it's pretty clear Goldenhog likes Nine Inch Nails. He managed to find a large number of module versions of their songs. It's pretty fitting, too!

Again, there's a lot to this game--including some graphics hidden away on parts of the board that the player never sees. I have the sense that this game should have been longer, but Goldenhog got overwhelmed with the task of making so many levels--already there's a huge number of boards.

The only reason I can't give it more than three stars is that there are no safeguards against just going in and winning the game in under 3 minutes. Once you know what to do, all of the challenge is gone--unless you want to go hunt for one of the game's many extraneous but fun hidden areas!
