autumn 2000 24 hours of zzt results WINNER Hercules 8.25 - 10 7 8 8 A breath of fresh air! There are shades of Post-Apopleptic in here, and I like that. The writing is fresh and good; I particularly enjoyed the two-character perspective, and the fact that both offer different observations on the same people. This game is like a piece of prose-poetry. Quite a trip. You'd think the topic was "drug," though. The point-of-view change was nice. The game portrayed what was unreal, which led me to believe there would be a contrast, but there wasn't. Great artwork. VERY interesting. an amazing game. Excellent. Play a high dude and capture the birds of paradise! and then play another. A strange, but weirdly satisfying love story. Sort of short, though. SECOND Flimsy 8.125 - 9 7 8 8.5 Very interesting, although ultimately pointless. However, the scenes are evocative, the prose is well-written (especially in the ending) and the character's nemesis, whatever it is, is brilliantly presented. Nice graphics, nice programming. I couldn't figure out what to do on the roof. The plot made me want to cry for the poor old bum, which is a plus, I think. very interesting. VERY well done. I know I'm a fan of Flimsy (at least, I think it's Flimsy, seems to be his style and it had the Blue Bear toolkit in) stuff anyway, but I'm not being biased. Loved the shadow effect. Quite enigmatic... THIRD knightt 7.875 - 5 10 8 8.5 Sometimes funny, in a knightt self-mockery kind of way. Score ten billion bonus points for killing me in it. Lose those points for including an AKware impromptu quiz. I wasn't fond of the Pokey bkzzt either. (VERY deep regret for being the one to pull knightt's score down, but I honestly felt and still feel this game deserved the score I gave it) I loved the zany humor. The artwork was good. I loved the AKWare reference. I couldn't find any gems or ammo, though. very funny game with nice graphics and story; ending was a bit lacking. Ohh god, Johnny! He named it after *that* Green Day song! I admit I laughed at the GIRL WHOSE TEARS DROWNED THE WORLD part. Full of Knightt cliches, this I enjoyed. Why doth the elder screech so? Also, gotta love Pokey ZZT. Great fun. YES I DO THINK OUR KANITE FRIEND STILL WANTED TO BE THE MINORITY HE CAN BE WHATEVER THE HELL HE LIKES AS LONG AS HE STOPS SINGING THAT "SONG" FOURTH WiL 7.25 - 8 7 5 9 I wanted tried so hard to like this game. I really did. It was inspired; the little poem on the title screen made me chuckle, and the menu screen was charming. Unfortunately, this game is largely of the "interactive movie" genre and the premise is ridiculous. This is not to say that it couldn't have been executed well; it simply wasn't. It would have been a great deal more enjoyable if it hadn't been so long. The scenes dragged on and on, forcing the player to sit through a great deal of flashing text at the bottom of the screen. On the upside, it had some very good visuals, and the "zooming out" sequences worked well to convey the idea of a universe-within-a-universe-within-a-universe. But, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't give this game any higher. Very creative. Also sort of strange. The game was a bit confusing and had some transportation bugs. Otherwise, a great game. i want the two months i spent playing this game back. Shapiro cares not for game characters whose names backwards are 'Stiffy' and 'Enema'! All the same, very nice concept. Yes, I've watched that Dr. Seuss cartoon before. OHH SHIT I JUST ATE A CREAM CRACKER I HAVE DESTROYED MANY UNIVERSES. Hey. I was hungry. FIFTH D. 7.125 - 7 6 8 7.5 The dialogue was well-written, and I particularly enjoyed the underground city and all there was to do there; it is undoubtedly my favorite board of the comp. The game had some wonderful little touches, like being able to lose your clothes in various ways and having other characters comment on your character's nudity. The plot was mostly well-written and made you think a little. "The Man" was pretty trite. It was sort of annoying figuring out which walls you can walk through. Nice effort. nice game, with a decent ending. Good. D's obsession with caves comes into play again here (hey, i also had it in my early days). Interesting play. The up-world would reject you! SIXTH (tie) zzblue 6.75 - 6 7 8 6 Delightfully poetic, the writing is rich and the words are sweet but the main character's actions seem unecessarily dark. The locations the character visits are bland. Interesting format with the poetic interpretation, then the narration, then the single word. It was also psychotic and somewhat scary :D interesting. A promising start to my journey through the contest entries... good use of the topic- a disaffected "average" (riiiight.) dude living in urban hell, who kills a whole bunch of people. I like it. The graphics were a little sketchy (expected, damnit) SIXTH (tie) ZZTyrant 6.75 - 6 8 6 7 Interesting subject matter, though in the opening of the game it feels as if the creator tried too hard to stick to the topic; but this passes. The writing was good, and the premise interesting, but I don't think the game took too much time to speculate on the main character's condition. Waiting for the guard to run out of ammo rather than fighting him in a shoot-out was nice. The artwork was good. The plot was creative and different. Sort of inspiring, actually. unsettling ending, but not in the way it should be. Another decent game. Nice music, gets it bumped up a coupla places...and I agree, racism is bad, good use of the topic. Quite a smart way of antagonising the main character from the player, too. SEVENTH Oof 6.5 - 8 4 6 8 Due to missing code, the background information on the game's story is missing. Beyond that it is playable. It is an elegant game, with charming visuals (the screen of information on the criminal I thought was particularly nice) and the puzzles were simple but substantial enough. The plot was not very interesting, and the lack of ending fails to give the game closure. I had to zap to exit the malfunctioning cinematic intro. It was too short. Heh, nice job with the "butter up the judge" approach, though. abrupt ending; vague plot. Excellent. Locate a man called Otto and stop the bad guys who're threatening him. Short, but sweet. EIGHTH Dsone 5.25 - 4 4 6 7 As I realized what the plant produced, I felt a chilling sense of premonition, and wondered in which direction the game would go next. The author spoiled it for me by popping up a text window and telling me what I thought I should be feeling on my own, thereby ruining the effect it had on me. To add insult to injury, he ended the game there. Very trite perception of the future. There's a textual glitch on the final board. Mediocre graphics. funny, and has a nice viewpoint on the presented subject. Horrid title screen. The game itself, happily, is more promising. It feels futuristic. But why is there grass if everything's got radiation poisoning? The cars in sky thing reminded me of The Jetsons. And that's always a good thing. 'Be yourself,' wise words, sir. NINTH NMZmaster 5.125 - 4 5 4 7.5 This entry was pleasing to the eye, but didn't make much sense or offer much gameplay. Nice effort. One of the few actual *games* submitted. The plot was an ordinary, cheesy ZZT plot, and, well, it wasn't all that creative. silly plot; short. Fame ain't all it's cracked up to be. This game, however, is. TENTH kkairos 4.875 - 5 3 5 6.5 The narratives were insightful, but the little mini-games didn't seem to fit with the concept. Decent effort. And you don't need to censor yourself. If you've got something to say, then say it. novel concept, but it gets really silly towards the end. Aww, how sweet. Gotta love that engine. Ken *is* mean! ELEVENTH Atrocity 3.75 - 2 5 3 5 A few interesting points and several nice visuals, but otherwise a silly pointless game. Comments: The newbie fake-out was funny. But I didn't really get the #mofo connection. Well, it was short, but it was fun to play, and you did some l33t hax0ring. made little sense and the ending was stupid. That thing's supposed to be a witch?! Cute game, but nothing special. TWELFTH chuckgrx 3 - 3 3 2 4 Amusing, for the most part, and occasionally quite funny. But otherwise not very notable. Points for humor and trippyness. not funny. Technically, it sucks. But it's so damn funny! And you stupid Americans DO spell 'color' wrong! THIRTEENTH sixteen 2.75 - 2 2 3 4 Again, great title screen and music followed by the obligatory "didn't have time" screen. I dig the ascii art, though. Sorry you didn't get to make anything. The art looks really cool from a distance. nice title screen; nice music. nothing more, though. One day, he'll actually get around to finishing one of these things. Until then, yeah. Nice title screen though. You get 4 because I like those ascii art things. FOURTEENTH unknown (ZINEARTX) 2.5 - 2 4 2 2 It had gameplay. Not much, but it was there. Well, it's playable. i didn't get it. I don't know what hellish apparation spawned this, but it needs to die. Right now. FIFTEENTH jacob h 2.25 - 2 2 2 3 Another game that looked so very, very good, but was barely started. My hopes after seeing the excellent title screen and listening to the music were shattered when I pressed play and read "..that's all there is for this entry." nice music, nice title screen. uhm... pretty title screen? I was wowed by the title screen, then sadly disheartened by the sixteenish "i didn't make a game!" thing. Oh well. Love the title screen, but a game, tis not made by title screen alone! LAST GipFace 1.75 - 2 1 2 2 First game I played. I was expecting something good from the first board, the menu, which looked quite elegant. Unfortunately, there is no game. uhhh... the title screen was pretty. see jacob h's comment. Aiee. Lifesucks, and so does this 'game'. Nice menu, though. It's not *that* hard to think something people-related up.
