Simple question: do you need a plot when playing an MZX game (i.e. Zelda, Final Fantasy), or can you just play a game with no story (or, pay no attention to its story at all) and still have fun (i.e. Mario, Sonic)? Granted, Mario and Sonic do have their storylines, but you can only find out about them if you read the instruction manuals (in their first outings).

This poll will help in developing my game. What are your opinions?

If the game depends on plot and the plot sucks, then I won't play it. Otherwise, I'm okay with either.

Serious damage to important body parts pretty much ruins any plans you had for living. Bummer.

With MZX games, I'm much like I am with regular games. It's pretty genre-dependant. Some genres rely on plot for at least a portion of their underpinnings (RPGs, strategy, etc) and some can get off nearly scot-free (sidescroller, SHMUP).

More is better in most cases, though. A pure arcade-style game would be an exception.

I voted #1 on technical truth, but I'm big on the RPGs.

General agreement with Terryn on this issue.

A good plot will probably make me like a game more, but I'm not going to avoid a game entirely just because the plot is lacklustre. I'm also of the belief that a game's plot can in fact stand on its own, and make a game worthwhile even if everything else about the game is substandard. Not everyone feels like I do, though!

I'm usually a huge fan of the game if there's a lot of creativity put into it, regardless of minor, negative aspects. This seems to be how my own games come out, as you all probably have sensed. I think the idea I have is that life is too short and MZX isn't serious enough to get extremely critical about things, and if I enjoyed the game, I can heartily say I enjoyed it. The options of this poll didn't really cover enough ground for me, but I chose the second option because--well--actually, I'm not sure!

Plot games I've liked even if never beaten:

Honor Quest
Engine Second Attack
Forrester
(beaten, of course)

Simply fun-fun games I've liked:

BAND games
Spoder Road
ASCII puzzle game
Calmness
(wow, yes)
Smash Time!

And games that were rather in the middle with story and such:

that old Ice Planet game (whatever it was called.. there were lots of blue smileys shooting and robots that floated around.)
Nuclear Nightmare
Forrester
(thought it appropriate to put in this category as well)

So basically, "how I prefer my MZX games" is stated in the paragraph at the top of this post.

Here are general rules of thumb to follow for koji to like your game:

If you have a plot, make it a good plot.
Make the gameplay fun.
You should spend more time coding/designing that you should making graphics.
And last but not least, the sound and music and graphics should match with the feel of the game.
The game's difficulty should progress linearly.

Other than thoes, hey I'm up for whatever you wanna dish out

lol at the Ridge Racer icon

I'm not a fan of MZX plots because it seems like people are falling into the same exact traps video game designers fall into when they put plots into their games. And yes, that goes for many of my earlier games, too. (Kikan will be fairly unique as far as plots go and actually have some relevant modern day themes that haven't really been touched in video games before) Creativity triumphs over all in MZX, if you ask me. Do something slightly unique and off base and I'll take notice. Like, I liked Forrester not for the plot but for the Super ZZT throwback style. And nWo Hollywood is still my favorite non DoZ game I made, just because its some fucked up mishmash of Startropics, SaGa, and wrestling.

GOOOD point.

I would very much like to see new themes introduced into games, both mzx indy and commercial.

Ad long as it's not completely random and stupid like ALOT of ZZT games. Or something where all the main character does is drink alot of alchohol, have alot of sex, and cuss his brains out.

I like the good stuff, like ZZT's Mercenary. Games like Arcade, Board, RPG, Sonic/Mario...
