Apologies if I'm posting in the wrong forum section here, but I've recently gotten back into MZX after a two-year hiatus and am eager to start again. However I'm still extremely newish to the whole thing and am not entirely sure what I'm doing just yet.

I currently have a very basic labyrinth level laid out at the moment, but now I want to make the view up close and centred on the character (think Super ZZT) so the player can't see everything all at once.

Which viewport settings should I use for that?

Just make the width and height smaller (e.g. 40x13) and centre it. Then test and adjust until you get something you like.

<Malwyn> Yes, yes. Don't worry I'd rather masturbate with broken glass than ask you for help again. :(

Will try that now. Thank you very much!

It worked, but is the huge border around the screen always meant to be there? Is there a way to fit or stretch the view?

I'm afraid MZX displays 80x25 characters no matter what. The only way to make things bigger would be to use multiple characters to display them.

Nah that's fine. Gives it a nice old school feel anyways. I can decorate around the border, right? Like adding counters, health bars, stats and stuff.

Only in a very limited fashion. The only thing that is displayed above the viewport is the message bar (that is, the message bar for * messages).

Ah okay. I'll see what I can do, still just experimenting around at the moment.

I have a couple of more newbie questions:

1. How do I change/mirror the character based on the direction? I'm almost 100% sure I did it a few years back when I last worked with MZX.
2. Is it possible to slow the player down to manual movement as opposed to automatically running across the board? Same with the firing rate, is there a way to make it more like traditional ZZT style so it's not rapid?

Update: I figured out how to slow the game's speed down, but it doesn't stay slowed down? I've set the speed to 8 and saved it, but whenever I test or play it, it's back to the default speed.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, you're trying to lock the game speed of the world you're creating by using the settings menu.
If you want to do it permanently, write this in your global robot script:

set "mzx_speed" to 8

This will also lock the speed of your world, so that no one can change it through the menu.

"mzx_speed" is one of several built-in variables. There's a complete list... somewhere. I think.

Yeah I've got the speed down now. Just need to figure out how to change the key bindings and figure out how to make the End board I've made the ending screen, because the player can still move around on it at the moment.

The thread linked above hasn't been updated in years btw. There's an online copy of the help file that's updated with every MZX release that might be more useful (here is a link to the counters section).
