Message from the Management

When you finish a new game, demo, engine, or utility, the first thing to do is submit it to the archive for approval. (Log in first, then Upload a New Game from the sidebar.) Then feel free to post about it in this forum; in fact, please continue to do this. This is so people will actually know about your game and play it. As nice as it is to have archive uploads automated, it's not going to help much if no one knows you have a new game to play.

When uploading your games to the archive, please zip up your game using the .ZIP format, even if it is just a .MZX file. As for less popular formats (such as RAR and 7Z), games uploaded in these formats will be rejected. This is because as wonderful as those compression algorithms might be, ZIP is a near universal compression standard, and the only one that will work with the in-game archive browser planned for MZX.

You can also attach your game to a new thread in this forum. In this case, you can use whatever compression format you find suitable. NOTE: Games posted this way won't be put into the archive unless submitted to the archive proper, or unless the author states he/she wants the game in.

Lastly, we suggest you post a suitable screenshot of your submission (in PNG format) along with the game.

Now I'm curious what this was. And I thought I was sequence breaking the game pretty bad already.

Hey, Lancer X!

I'm a huge fan of Meritous and Eternal Eclipse Taoyarin and while I'm still starting out in this, I am really enjoying it thus far. But I have a question... what does "Attack" do when an item gives me, say, 1.3x Attack and 1.3x Damage? The NPCs have been pretty helpful as far as mechanical explanations go, but I haven't gotten to this one yet, if it is discussed. I sort of have a handle on the other stats (I think).

One of the mystics has that info, but basically, the Attack stat affects:
  • Damage
  • Chance to hit
  • The power of 'battle art'

Damage only affects the amount of damage you deal and is applied after those, so attack is generally better.

The only puzzles I skipped were that, the one with the rotating bridges (I actually did some of it, but I couldn't get all the chests), and the floor slider thing.

Yeah. Once you figure out the right basic setup the hardest part about completing it is to not screw up. Which is really easy to do, incidentally (see my original screenshot, ngggghhh)

Same here. I actually spent a while on the floor slider thinking I was making good progress but it wasn't enough in the end.

The floor slider was pretty brutal, I got the square maybe half-way over but couldn't figure out how to do much more :( Lancer really needs to upload that solution video...

I'm stuck on the bottom floor of the Star tower. I feel like I'm missing something really obvious but I can't get more than 3 boulders free and that doesn't seem like enough to reach the pressure plate.

In case anyone else finds it useful, saves made in MZX 2.9x can be updated to a newer version of red with some manual work. Required tools: Info-ZIP zip and unzip, a hex editor, the MegaZeux editor.

  • Back up your save.
  • Use Info-ZIP unzip to extract the counters and strings from the old save file.
    unzip saveslot0.sav counter string
    

  • Use Info-ZIP zip to create a new counters save file.
    zip temp.ctr counter string
    

  • Use a hex editor to prefix the MZX counters save file with the following 8 capital letters: COUNTERS
  • Use Info-ZIP zip to fix the file header offsets in the counters save.
    zip -F temp.ctr --out temp2.ctr
    

    It should print this:
    Fix archive (-F) - assume mostly intact archive
    Zip entry offsets appear off by 8 bytes - correcting...
     copying: counter
     copying: string
    
    

  • Open the MegaZeux editor in the folder containing red.mzx, create a robot with the following program, and test the world (Alt+T).
    set "temp2.ctr" to "LOAD_COUNTERS"
    set "__transfer_save" to 1
    swap world "red.mzx"
    

  • If everything looks right, you can now use the menu to overwrite the save slot.


If anyone needs their 2.9x saves updated but doesn't know what any of this means, Lancer or I can probably throw together a tool for it. I think this probably only matters for me since I was running red 1.01(!) instead of 1.06 somehow.
