As you may or may not be aware, the 25th anniversary of the release of MegaZeux 1.00g is December 4th. This is only six weeks away, and to say the number of games released this year hasn't been stellar would be an understatement. In honor of MegaZeux's 25th birthday, it'd totally rule if we could try to release some games and share them.

So, we bring you...

THE 25th ANNIVERSARY MEGAZEUX RELEASE PARTY!!1

:birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday:

THE "RULES"

  • Make something with MZX between NOW and January 31st, 2020.

  • Release it here on DMZX (and on itch.io if you want!).

  • There's no restriction to how many times you do this.

  • Whatever you make doesn't have to be directly related to the 25th anniversary of MegaZeux, what MegaZeux means to you, etc. if you don't want to. It's also totally okay to do exactly that, too.

  • Whatever you make doesn't have to have been made entirely within this time limit. It can be a game you're trying to finish, or you can release an update for one of your existing games.

  • This isn't a competition. If enough games are released during the time limit and there's enough interest there's always the possibility of a Game of the Year (GOTY) vote or similar, but keep in mind that it isn't the point.

  • If you use or make non-trivial modifications to something someone else made (like music or Robotic code) and it's under copyright (if not specified assume yes), it never hurts to ask for permission to use their work or to at least credit them.

  • That's it!

WHAT SHOULD I MAKE

Here's some ideas about what you could make. You can also do something that isn't listed here if you want.

  • Make a game. It doesn't matter how short or long, whether it uses advanced features or just the basics, or if it has GROUNDBREAKING GRAPHICS or just uses the default ASCII character set.

  • Make a game demo. Tip: if your demo has enough content you can remove anything indicating that it's a demo and everyone will just think it's a complete (albeit maybe short) game!

  • Make a showcase or graphical demo. Your MZX world could show off MZX art you made in an "art gallery" the player explores. It could also be a non-interactive world the player watches, or you could just post images/videos if you want.

  • Finish something you've been working on that isn't done yet. I just want to stress that anything you make for this doesn't have to have been made entirely during this time period.

  • Update an existing game. Does one of your old games have a bug or "questionably legal" content you want to replace? Are there features you're interested in adding to your game that you haven't got around to? Is there a game that isn't yours you know of that needs a patch (with the original author's permission)?

  • Make a tutorial. Graham Peet's excellent tutorial series hasn't been updated to include any features added to MZX 2.90+, so that might be a good place to start if you're interested. (This isn't necessarily making something with MegaZeux, but it would be invaluable to the community nonetheless.)

  • You could also just release a project dump or unfinished game collection if you want to.

OTHER STUFF

Feel free to post any updates/progress on the things you're working on or ask for help in this thread. That's what it's here for! You can also come and talk about what you're making on the MZX Discord server if you'd like. KKairos has explicitly offered to help anyone who's interested in (re)learning MegaZeux, and several of the rest of us are willing to give advice too (either here on the forum or on Discord).

There will probably be at least one archive tag that we'll add to games released for this. I haven't worked the specifics out yet, but there will likely be one tag for new releases and another tag for updates (to avoid ambiguity).

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING

Because I'm very enthusiastic about MegaZeux. Because of this, in addition to constantly nagging about this I'll also be announcing games/etc as they're released on the MZX Twitter account and/or MZX Facebook page. Let's try to get as many people making MZX games as we can!

I just love this post so much! I will see if I can do some updated tutorials for my MegaZeux series on YouTube. That would be fun! I’ve also been thinking about a simple pixel perfect side scroller. Not a lot of time to myself right now unfortunately and I’m just starting to get back into working on my game (ahem, my life’s work, jk) but I’d love to contribute something to this awesome MegaZeux love fest! Cheers ya’ll!
Currently working on Servo for MegaZeux, I hope to complete it by the middle of 2015? Who knows...

I added a section to the first post for contributions to this. Just Bumper Stickers 2.0 so far, but that should change soon...!

I totally missed the post, so I'm relieved that the deadline is January 1st.
Really, really, reeeeeallly cool idea - so I hope that a lot of things will be uploaded before the deadline!

It would be cool to make something new, but I see that the rules are nicely relaxed. Maybe it's time to dig through my hard drive, because I definitely have a lot of unfinished stuff lying about - none of which has ever seen the light of day. Maybe some of it can get a nice bow on top and, voila!

Just FYI--deadline's not actually till January 31st, so you do have a full 30 days longer than you might be thinking! Good luck!

It's a good thing that I know how to read.

And a good thing that I got 30 more days too.
I need as much time as I can get to feel bad about having done nothing of substance. Procrastination is very time consuming!

Can someone please either confirm this is a bug, or tell me that I'm slow and explain why it doesn't work?

Code:

: "scan"
if c?? Bullet p00 at WEST then "do"
goto "scan"

: "do"
[ "Yea"

This does NOT work. It's supposed to test if there is a north moving player bullet (p00) to the west of the robot.

It never gets to the "do" label.

All of the other similar if tests work, ex a south moving player bullet (p01) to the west works.

?????

I'm using the latest version.

That's just an oddity in how board execution in MZX works. Suppose the bullet and robot are positioned like this:
 R
B

The board executes left-to-right, top-to-bottom, so the robot executes first. It checks to its west, which is an empty space, so it doesn't go to the label. After it finishes execution, the bullet moves up one space on the same cycle.

On the next cycle, the bullet and robot are positioned like this:
BR

The bullet executes first, moving up. The robot then executes, checking to its west, which is now a space again.

You can get around this by putting the robot on the left side of where you're expecting the bullet.

<@Tixus> Anyway, I set the year to 1988 for some reason.
<@Tixus> And set the microwave to run for a minute and 28 seconds.
<@Tixus> But it failed to send me back in time, and I was disappointed.
<Insidious> Tixus accidentally microwaved the 80s
<Insidious> that is my takeaway from this

As we get towards the end of this event, I'd like to remind everyone that even unfinished releases are appreciated! And that many people are willing and able to offer you help on Discord :)

I really wanted to make something, but between being busy and having been sick, it just wasn't going to happen. But I do have a variety of unfinished games that I could upload. None of it has been seen before, but also none of it is impressive. If I can get around to it, I'd like to upload a few of the most substantial files. Some things I have are barely more than a single screen with nothing interactive and as such not interesting at all. But I do have some things that are actually playable to some degree.

Since myself and several other people have had trouble finishing everything they'd like to within the (tbf pretty lenient) timeframe of this, there will be a "grace period" for submissions until the end of February (in effect, the submission period has been extended to February 29th).

The reason I personally haven't worked on as many game patches as I'd like (or the game I'd planned to release (or MegaZeux 2.92c)) is because I've been working quite a lot on the DMZX archive behind the scenes trying to improve its general code quality/reliability/security and getting it using newer PHP features. (I don't know if these updates really count as a 'release' for the purposes of this event. :( )

I know Coronavirus threw so many people's plans into a tizzy, but did anything ever come of this?

We did a BKZX a couple weeks ago. Does that count?
