(Formerly "I'm Logicow and ZOMG LOOK GRAPHIX!")

I made one too but it's not very fast :p

also note that in the included example the windows create light instead of shadows.

Yeah. Tell you what, when you want to brag about something, go ahead an post it in an APPLICABLE thread, or make a new one. Pretty, sure. Contributing to the decay of MZX productivity, yes indeed. Entirely off topic. Split.

It took me a few seconds to realize what was going on with this. For those of you who can see it, its light shining through window panes, and depending on how you move your mouse determines the angles of the rays of light.

Logicow, this looks great!

<Kuddy> I can only imagine what LogiCow's next DoZ game is going to be like >_<
<Kuddy> Say the topic is "weather". He'll make something like "you're a mite and you have to dodge the snow as you ascend to the heavens" and you have to dodge a lot of blocks, and movement is pixel perfect :(

*sigh*

Logi, you've already proven a thousand times over that you can do fun graphic effects in MegaZeux. Wow. Okay. Nice. We get the point. Now, if you can find some actual use for these graphics, like, I dunno, in a game that's actually worth playing for more than five minutes, then that's great, go do it. Otherwise, you really ought to find a more constructive hobby to pursue, because it seems like everything you've made since Palzor (excluding Dotgame) is completely useless. We were impressed the first few times, but now that you release something like this every week, it's really gotten old, as demonstrated by the prior reactions of Wervyn, Es, and Revvy, as well as the slew confused posts regarding your windowpane engine. You have lots of potential, and I for one would like to see something worthwhile come out of you. Please don't waste your ability like this.

Heh, it looks cool from the screenshots, but looks useless though. If you're really good with graphics, as it seems everyone thinks (I haven't seen a lot of your work, but this is very nice looking) I think I might ask your help for a few things in Eridia (see journals) that should give you something to do besides a few fascinating but pointless projects.

I like. :p

What you're doing is only "special" because it's in MZX. Stuff like this has been done and redone in legitimate programming languages. MZX is designed for making games more easily than a standard programming language and it's pretty good at that; MZX is not designed for this kinda stuff and seeing whether you can push it to its limits with silly graphical demos is worse than useless, it's negatively productive. It's like spending hours turning a brick into a cup when you have clay just as available.

It's neat to push the limits, though. And saying that you shouldn't do this kind of stuff in MegaZeux because it wasn't designed for it is like saying that you shouldn't make a side-scroller in Quake because that's not how it was intended to be formatted (note: there is a Quake-powered side-scroller).

And what's worse, releasing useless graphical demos or just not releasing anything? MZX was designed for people to have fun with it (as are most games). LogiCow probably finds doing these little demos to be fun; what's the harm in that?
:)

I'm not trying to toot Logi's horn, but Logi has made some pretty good DoZ games in the past, which leads me to wonder what a real LogiCow game would end up being. I know he (of course) has final decision on whatever he wants to do, but many of us think he should buckle down and work on a game, because we all know how easy it is to get distracted. These graphical demos are really nothing of interest, but a game would be (theoretically) be something of great interest, considering the low turnout of games these days.

Very few people open these graphical demos more than once, even fewer after more than a day, but a game will continue to be opened time and time again.

It's not SMZX. It's a program in robotic that outputs a 24bit bmp.

First of all, that window effect is not very impressive. Anyone can do an effect like that simply by creating copies of the image at various stages of zooming, then figuring out how light a given part of the final image should be by looking up coordinates in the zoomed images based on the mouse coordinates. Secondly, there's no point in doing some sort of rendering that outputs to a bitmap in MZX. Infact, there's very little point in having lighting calculations in MZX except on a very basic level. Sure, it'd be neat to see a pseudo light sourced game, but doing something like bumpmapping or normal mapping in MZX is utterly useless. Firstly, if you want a 3d rendering program, there are already hundreads that are non MZX based and quite good. Secondly, writting something in MZX that does either of these contributes nothing to the development of any game or engine in MZX, due to its inherent speed problems and well.. How useful is normal mapping in MZX anyway? The concept of using MZX to render something is an interesting but useless idea. All in all, Id be much more impressed with an amazing game engine than I am with this stuff. And Im sure that other members of the community feel the same. I dont mean to bash on you, Logicow, I was very impressed with your one board DoZ entry, and I do think your a top notch MZX coder. Perhapse one of the best. Im just saying this demo scene stuff is useless.
