Quite simple, just like the recomend a movie thread in the media section, here we can recomend video games, be it console, portable or computer, if you've played a good game, or some good games, recomend them here, with some details about the company and give a reason why you think they're good. I'll start off

Saints Row 2
Developer: Volition, Inc.
Publisher: THQ
Game Engine: Havok

Platform(s) Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Genres Sandbox, third-person shooter, action-adventure
Modes Single-player, multiplayer, co-operative play

Why do i like saints row 2? It's a little bit like Grand Theft Auto, which is a series i've played since it's launch, but unlike GTA, Saints Row goes for a not so serious style of gameplay. The interesting aspect of the game is the respect system, respect is earned by several means, including, but not limited to, performing side missions, killing enemy gang members, blowing up gang vehicles and performing dangerous vehicle manovours, such as driving into oncomming traffic, flying an aircraft at dangerously low altitude, base jumping from aircraft and tagging certain areas.

Story: The story is an easy to understand story, following the unnamed hero from saint's row 1, who was involved in some kind of explosion at the end of saints row 1 (i don't know the details, having never completed saints row 1 due to a faulty disk). Their are 3 rival gangs in Stillwater City, the Japanese Ronin gang, the Brotherhood and the Sons of Sadami, each gang has roughly 8 missions assositated with them, as well as 3-5 strongholds. After the gangs are defeated, the player receaves a final set of missions, that bring closure to the player's character.

Customisation: Your character male or female can be completly customised, from clothing (purchased at stores), to body form (at start of game, or at plasic surgeons) to accent.
Male Voice 1 (Cockney English)
Male Voice 2 (African American)
Male Voice 3 (Hispanic)
Female Voice 1 (Neutral)
Female Voice 2 (African American)
Female Voice 3 (Hispanic)

Quote [my favourate quote. Is funny with cockey accent]: (trapped in dealers limo, the player is as high as a kite from 2nd hand dope smoke) Who the fuck are you?
Mr. Sunshine (his face is distorted due to the player being high): They call me Mister Sunshine.
Player: Listen sunshine, i don't care how fucked up your face is, i'm not scared of you, or that other arsehole.
General: Dispose of this trash.
Mr. Sunshine: Yes General.
Player (laughs his head off): You hear him, this wanker thinks he's a general? [gun is pointed at player] Aw shit. {gunfight ensures, and the player manages to dive out the moving limo, still messed up from the drugs} Well, this is a bad time to be fucked up.
[phone rings]
Shaundi: Boss, it's Shaundi.
Player [giggles] Hey Shaundi.
Shaundi: What the fuck, are you high?

Overall rating: 9/10

Looses a point for crashing too much.

i'd recommend PREY if you like weird sci-fi FPS games and, uh, have a computer that isn't a high-tech dishwasher! currently it is a "5 frames per second" enjoyable experience of mine.

I would recommend Baroque (WII, PS2). Been playing it lately, and it is quite enjoyable.

Title: Ayakashibito
Japanese: あやかしびと
OP video: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=FMleYGQcNQE
Company: Propeller (branch of Will)

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Plot Synopsis
After World War II, a supernatural disease (Jinyoubyou) codenamed ASSHS began to appear in humans. The symptoms of the disease varied widely, often allowing those infected to call upon superhuman strength or other extended attributes. The governments of the world moved quickly to isolate people showing symptoms of ASSHS (known as Jinyou, or 'supernatural humans') to a city called Kamisawa, with the exception of those they deemed too dangerous to leave alone. Out of those, some Jinyou were set free after having remote explosives planted in several places inside their bodies. Others were confined to a mysterious hospital on an isolated island.

The protagonist of the story is one of those confined to the island. After a number of events, with the help of a supernatural fox able to assume human form that he named Suzu, he managed to escape the island and fled to Kamisawa City, where nothing more than a name is necessary to gain residency. He and Suzu then transferred into Kamisawa Gakuen and attempted to live the everyday life they never had. Unknown to them, a number of different forces began to make their moves, forcing Suzu and the protagonist to act strategically or be quickly overwhelmed.

Introduction
Ayakashibito is a 2005 eroge by Propeller. If you played Fate/stay Night hoping for epic fights, fabulous characters and non-stop action, you were probably disappointed, because you should have played this instead. If I were to rank all the eroges I've played purely on the quality of their fight scenes, Ayakashibito would be at the top. Of course, the other aspects of the VN, such as story and plot, were not neglected. Whatever you're after in an eroge, Ayakashibito probably has it.

Scenario
Ayakashibito's story is long, in-depth, thrilling and emotionally compelling. I would recommend not completing this in less than four days (allowing additional time to the first route you complete and to the last route (Suzu's), as the former will require playing all of the game's trunk and the latter is very long) as it isn't the sort of eroge you want to rush. There are a total of four routes and a total of 8 different per-character endings (3 on Touko's route, 3 on Suzu's route and one each for Kaoru's and Tonya's routes). There are also a few events that require taking different branches on some of the routes. Tonya's route is the worst, and it's still extremely good, so none of the stories feel neglected.

There's generally a massive number of events that take place that are specific to each route, and you'll spend a lot of time with them. Ayakashibito never gets boring. Characters have plans within plans and other ulterior motives that are hinted at, a bit at a time, in each route, and you can generally put two and two together just in time for the revelation to be applicable to the story.

The story switches between comedic, dark, hot-blooded, thrilling and sad scenes flawlessly, and the humour, while very well presented and frequently legitimately funny, never gets in the way of the serious story. It simply does pretty much everything right. Slice of life fans, nakige fans and fans of heart-pounding fight scenes will find what they are looking for in Ayakashibito.

Characters
Ayakashibito boasts a decent range of characters. Pretty much everyone in the game is a badass at some point or another, and the long scenario gives them all a chance to shine. Certain characters will be your enemies one moment and your allies the next, and nobody misses their chance to show off. There's far too many significant characters to list here, so I'll just name a few.

Kisaragi Soushichi (Assumed name. Real name: Takebe Ryouichi). The protagonist of Ayakashibito, he is attempting to live some semblance of a normal life with Suzu, the supernatural fox he befriended. He is mainly trained in hand-to-hand combat. His Jinyou ability is manipulation of metal (and boy does he use it).

Kisaragi Suzu (Assumed name. Real name: N/A). Imouto character (of a fashion); Soushichi's (adopted) sister. Actually a supernatural nine-tailed fox that Soushichi befriended years ago in a cursed forest on the island. She assumed a human form and assisted him in escaping the island. One of the four winnable heroines.

Ichinotani Shuugen. The student council president of Kamasawa Gakuen, he weilds a katana as a weapon (which he openly carries around the school). Is a very serious, but honourable person.

Ichinotani Touko. Shuugen's younger sister, and the vice president of the student council. She also openly carries a katana as a weapon. She is the shrine maiden of the Shinto shrine that also doubles as her family's home. One of the four winnable heroines.

Uesugi Keijirou. Another member of the student council, and a cheerful, hot-blooded character. He rides a motorcycle.

Tonya Antonovna Nikitia. Russian-born 2nd-year student, and member of the student council. She uses a rather peculiar, but fancy (and useful) type of wired projectile as a weapon. As it is actually a part of her Jinyou ability, it is also part of her body, and she is able to use it with great skill. One of the four winnable heroines.

Youkou Kuki. The man who taught Soushichi to fight, and sub-commander of Dominion. An expert in all forms of combat, he is one of the most dangerous characters in Ayakashibito by far. While he used to be a loving family man, after a certain event, he became cold and withdrawn, now seeking a different purpose.

Iidzuka Kaoru. Soushichi's childhood friend (of sorts), now commander of Dominion. A cold and ruthless character. One of the four winnable heroines.

Visuals
Very nice art from the Phantom INTEGRATION / Saya no Uta artist. Nobody really does a better job for this kind of story, and while he's not my favourite eroge artist, he's certainly up there. There's plenty of CGs, so you don't feel shortchanged during the battles, and they look very good. Sure, there could be a couple more, but that's nearly always the case.

Voice Acting
The game is fully voiced (as far as I can remember, every character in the game is voiced. At the very least, all of the remotely important characters are voiced all of the time). The game doesn't do anything half-assed like muting the protagonist during the H scenes, and nor does he moan like Makoto (School Days) or Ichihiko (R.U.R.U.R) do. The seiyuu are all appropriate for their roles, and they do a good job, so I can't really give this anything less than 10/10.

Music
Good selection of BGM tracks.. there aren't too few, and they are well used. The combat themes are especially notable, and probably my favourite combat themes in any eroge I've played to date. They're perfect for getting your blood pumping. The themesongs are also pretty good. No complaints here.

Overall

Scenario: 9.5/10
Characters: 9.5/10
Graphics: 9.5/10
Voice Acting: 10/10
Music: 9/10

Overall (not an average of the above scores):
9.5/10

Why I think it rocks your socks off
Seriously awesome. I've never played another eroge quite as cool as this. If you like Ayakashibito, check out its pseudo-sequel / spiritual successor 'Bullet Butlers'. After you've played those, play their fandisc, Chrono Belt, which is basically yet another awesome game (not at all like most fandiscs). Neither of those titles are QUITE as good as Ayakashibito, but they're still great and well worth your time.

there, happy now scorch?

yeah i was about to say

that way you can voice a much broader range of reviews than just "i recommend this", for example, if a game was crappy you could tell us about it there

i'm helpful:
normal games review thread
obscure games review thread

Because, my simple minded friend, those are review a game threads, not recomend a game threads. Big difference. A review could be anything good, and also, those threads are not used very often.

Yeah, I mean geez, nobody has used them since almost TWO YEARS AGO.

Probably because there's better places to read and possibly write reviews >_>

there, I posted one. I wasn't sure which of the two threads were appropriate, but since the game sold over 10,000 copies it's probably not all that obscure

I'm pretty sure obscure refers to how well known the game is in relation to English audiences... not Japanese >_>

Quote

Because, my simple minded friend, those are review a game threads, not recomend a game threads. Big difference. A review could be anything good, and also, those threads are not used very often.

I would retaliate but it seems Kokuchou has done it for me already!

Instead I'll just say: stop spelling recommend incorrectly ugh...

Be nice, both of you.

THE BIG BOSS MAN IS CENSORING ME AGAIN

So, I'll say it again (if only so that Goshi's reference to my statement makes sense). There is a difference between reading a review of a game, and a simple recommendation. Take, for example, a Narutard cosplaying as Kakashi and spouting nothing but praise for the show to no end, a post that says "Naruto is a good anime," a positive, thought-out, and well constructed review of of Naruto, and pretend you've never heard of Naruto. If you heard the Narutard, you would surely be sick of hearing anything about Naruto after spending a long enough time around her/him; if you read the post, you wouldn't have any idea what Naruto is about, and you'd probably have little to no motivation to bother finding out; if you read the review, you might want to try watching an episode of the show, or at least look it up on Wikipedia or Google -- recommending any form of media without backing up your recommendation is inherently ineffective, and can even be tedious when done incorrectly, but if you back up your recommendation, you might as well be writing a positive review of the show, in the Review Thread, where reviews go. This thread fails to both 1) be useful, and 2) serve a new purpose, at the same time.

tl; dr: this thread is still useless; calling somebody simple minded doesn't warrant an edit, but referring to somebody's post as offal does I guess

I'll go ahead and plug another recommendation for Cross Channel, having finished the game a couple days ago. The game was slow to engage my interest, and my impression of the protagonist hovered between mild dislike and "are you SURE this game has no bad ends because I want to kill this sucker" most of the time, but the intrigue and emotional investment grows over time and really pays off in the ending. You can tell you've experienced something meaningful when you still have emotional pangs thinking about it and listening to music from it days later. So yeah, if you can stomach the main character being a perverted moron most of the time, and the story feeling like it's literally going in circles for awhile, it's worth it in the end.

"I liked the part where I murder all of you."
To lie is to change the truth.
..Ignorance is to be unaware of the truth.
....Incompetence is to be unable to grasp the truth.
......And escape is to run away from the truth.
It is useless to run, since the truth is right next to you.

Gonna recommend Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for PSP, for anybody that:
-likes oldskool 16/32bit RPGs
-likes turn based battles
-likes to read, as this game has a RIDICULOUS amount of content in terms of text (like, every time a new story event happens, EVERY SINGLE VILLAGER changes what they say
-doesn't mind a slow blurn, and also has 50+ hours to invest in a game

Also, on the subject of PSP recommendations, there's Every Extend Extra:
-made by Tetsuya Mizuguchi of Rez, Lumines and Space Channel 5 fame
-awesome trippy visuals
-fantastic driving techno soundtrack from the time before techno got all mnml
-great risk/reward gameplay, the goal of the game is to 'detonate' your ship to create massive chains, to boost the number of your extra lives
-perfect to play in small bites, as any good portable game should be

Let me recommend Ghost Trick for DS:
-developed by Shu Takumi of Phoenix Wright fame
-unique puzzle-solving game where you play as a ghost and haunt objects to solve puzzles
-story filled with lots of twists and turns (I wasn't too crazy about the reveals in the end but getting there was a blast, and a ton of people liked the overall story)
-catchy music
-and not to mention, some of the best animation I've seen in a game:

Finally, Apple Jack for the Xbox Live Indies:
-the XBLA Indie marketplace has lots of garbage on it but this one is an absolute gem
-the game and its music evoke pastoral British life
-clean and simplistic 2D graphics that would fit at home in the 16 bit era
-gameplay is like a hodgepodge of Mario 2 USA and Yoshi's Island, where you chuck apples at a series of opponents. The game is more of a puzzle platformer than anything, and is very tough.
-game is only like 80 MS points ($1) so you definitely get your money's worth out of it
