It's good to have friends in IT :(

He was pretty surprised at the traffic it got, actually! I was surprised to see it linked to from everywhere, years later. Anyone happen to know if there's an archive of that around? That was a hell of a repository, and anyone could upload games IIRC. I can't even remember the full URL, just the navy command's.

Hiii! I'm Puella, and I'm Wervyn's wife. Joined up here so I could practice making my own games. Work takes precedence, of course, but I'm looking forward to learning! May not be super active, but I'll be around.
Looking forward to MZXCon coming up soon!

Hey there, kinda new here, but I was shocked to see that not only is MZX still around, but there's a community around it! I haven't played MZX in so long. I messed with the DOS version years ago and made a couple of games on it (all which were sadly not saved). Seeing people around here makes me wanna give MZX a go again. Might start with something simple, I hope. Anyway, hello to you all.

Hi Antwan, I'm kind of like you in that I've used Megazeux for a long time, but was never active in its community until just recently. I actually just joined in December of 2012, a few days before my 36th birthday. I didn't even realize there was an introduction thread until Antwan posted here a few days ago. I've made a few posts but I'll introduce myself anyway to make it official.

My parents bought a used IBM 286 in 1993. It came with about 12 games (I think it had a 16mb hard drive) It came with Dos which I quite liked. I used to exit out of Windows 95 in our next computer and use Dos because I thought it was easier than learning to use windows. Anyway, ZZT was one of those games. I ignored it for a while in favor of Commander Keen; ZZT didn't look like much fun. I think my younger brother tried it first, when I saw what he was doing I was blown away. I had no idea you could make your own games with it. I began to make some games that weren't any good (cliché).

Later we got a 486 and a modem. This was like 94 or 95ish. I looked up ZZT online figuring people would've made some games I could download and tryout. Sure enough they did, but there was some info about this other supposedly more robust GCS called Megazeux. I was instantly hooked. It was enough like ZZT that I could just jump right in, but it was expanded in so many different areas that I couldn't believe it.

I have all my Megazeux games still and it's fun to watch the progression. I've definitely been build up to what I'm working on right now for a long time. I've made top down games and love to play them, but I have a thing for side scrolling games. I've released two demo games, Amnesia and Servo. I have a confession; I've never finished a game in Megazeux. I think I'm a perfectionist and that causes me to go back and redo everything in my games until I realize that the game just isn't that great an idea to begin with.

I love programming; in fact, I just make games so that I can write the programs for them. That's the fun part to me. But I've never written any code outside of Megazeux or ZZT. I hated math in school, dropped out of high school and never went to college. So I don't think I’ll ever be a real programmer, or that I even want to be. Things stop being fun for me when I have to do them. Anyway, I recently decided that I really wanted to release a completed game and that for that to happen, I was going to have to get serious about making a good game. One that would be as much fun to play as it was to make. So I worked on an idea I had in my head for a long time and finally came up with the hook that I thought could work. I also realized that I need to take it down a notch or two in the perfectionism department and settle for not having it be perfect in every way. Stop trying to add more features after I've begun to create it.

Stick to the plan, and this time the plan is (I feel) good enough to be left alone. I don't have to add more ideas to try and make a mediocre game good. I really feel positive that this game will be a hit when it's done. And I'm making good progress, which speaks volumes to me about how good the idea is. It's so much fun to design the levels to this game that I am having as much fun as I do playing the most fun games I own. I sometimes lose interest in playing games in the spring and summer. I usually switch gears and begin to tinker with my car again. (I love rebuilding an engine as much as I love programming in fact).

So we'll see what happens when summer rolls around. A few things keep me out of the garage right now though. My son, Brennan, is three. It's a lot easier to sit down at the computer than it is to take a three year old out to the garage, especially in the winter. A lot of days, he sits on my lap and plays games on my iPhone while I play with Megazeux. My wife is in nursing school right now. That takes most of her time, so Brennan is mainly my responsibility right now. That doesn't leave me with a lot of free time. After taking care of him and doing chores, I usually find two hours to myself in the evening to create my game, if D'Leene (my wife) doesn't need help with homework or just to cuddle with me distraction free. I usually use my break time at work to come up with ideas for the levels of my game. This all sounds like a sad existence when I sit here and spell it out, but it really makes me happy. And she graduates in 5 months, which will take a load off of both of us. We need it.

Well, I just really needed to get all of that out there for whoever cares. Hopefully I don't annoy anyone by going on about myself for too long. I haven't ever used a forum before this one, so this is really different for me. I am thinking of starting a journal for the game, but I think I want to get a little further into it first. Thanks for reading this.
Currently working on Servo for MegaZeux, I hope to complete it by the middle of 2015? Who knows...

I can't help but to agree with you on that. I even saw myself in some of those things (like being a perfectionist. I should've never given up on that LoZ game I was making years back)
Though now looking back to those days, I just can't help to be ashamed of myself. Short-tempered and really not being able to take a joke. Good thing that's changed now.

But anyway, It was indeed a very inspiring post, and motivated me even more to keep working on this project I'm currently working on. Might post a journal about it anytime soon, once I have something properly playable.

Hi, I'm Becca. I first came to the MZX community when I was probably 10 years old, creating a game called Ed Venture which became legendary for how bad it was. (No, I don't have a copy, unfortunately). Back then my name was Ben, and I went by the handles Zuljin, Roto and Zoma. My second game, Fred the Freak, was described by Scott Hammock like this: "The jokes aren't funny; they're just there." I made a sequel, which also sucked. Then I invited a user named FredTC to remix the games, and he actually made them somewhat decent.

I was pretending to be two years older than I was, so I made up some stories about myself: that I had a girlfriend, that I was really strong, etc. I became known as a compulsive liar, which I guess was about right! I made a demo for a game called Staff of Gandarm, which was going to have bosses by Spider123 (I think that was his name), but eventually Spider123 lost interest and I was left without bosses. So I wrote more comedy games, which were about at the level of an 11-year-old's sense of humor. FredTC, me and a few other users started a joke channel called #goatsex, and were banned from #megazeux at that time for starting a "boycott channel." Such was the state of affairs back then.

When I did make it to high school I developed an intense interest in poetry; I saw it as an extension of my interest in creativity in terms of MegaZeux. At one point I submitted some poetry to a site called poetry.com, got a big fancy letter about how great I was at poetry, and bragged about it to everyone. Then I found out that poetry.com was a scam, and I was pretty humiliated by that. Around that time I stopped coming around the community.

I went off to college, majored in computer science and developed a massive drug addiction problem. Somehow I managed to graduate anyway, and get a job out in India, which I was forced to leave because I couldn't keep it together. When I got home I got back into poetry, started getting accepted to real journals, started my own literary press, etc. At the moment I'm still writing, and still programming, and clean off drugs, and I've begun living as a woman as of the beginning of this year. I just moved from Ohio to Washington, D.C.. I stop back here from time to time just to remember something that was a big part of my life at one point.

Welcome back, Becca. I'm glad to see that you had some interest in returning to the community, if only just to say "Hi" and let us know who you are. I do hope that you renew your interests in game creation. The community is a little sparse nowadays, but it's a lot more accepting of people in general, I think. The community seems to have grown up (matured) a lot, as you have.

There is a tutorial series that I've been working on, if you want to catch up on the many changes to MegaZeux that have been made over the years. I'm just starting to get into areas that would be new to you if you haven't picked up MegaZeux in a while, such as expressions, the V-layer, and sprites (coming soon).

Anyway, yeah....welcome back =^)

Wow, I was actually wondering if it was you or someone related based on your e-mail address. Here I thought we were both 13 year olds back then. It's kind of funny, inmate (15 at the time) would come to regret picking on us when he realized we were only 13, but here you were only 11. But now we're like late 20s, early 30s. Kind of surreal to think about. I don't know if you noticed, but djtiesto (Luke Drelick) is still kicking around here, and there are probably one or two others who were also on IRC back in the beginning. Also had no idea you were in Ohio until recently (I've personally been living in Ohio again since 2008)

It sounds like you've had a rough life but that things are turning around and I really hope for the best for you. For whatever it's worth, welcome back. The MZX community has been pretty small for a long time, but it still manages to turn out some very good games every now and then. Nothing like what I would have thought to be seeing back in 1996. If you'd like some of us could recommend some favorites.

(oh yeah, and you were just one number off - Spider124. :()

EDIT: I wouldn't even have had to ask who you were if your username didn't fly over my head. Whoosh. Nice pick.

Hi, I'm known as Perry Steven on most of the sites I have accounts on. On rare occasions I am also known as REACTOR.

I decided to make an account here because I am very much interested in different game editors/engines, something new to do, and a new community to share/talk to. Previously I was making what some commonly call "worlds" for one of Hamumu Software's games. I think you must have heard me mention it once in my previous post.

Now I am thinking of making my own MZX game. The universe of games which revolve around this engine is quite impressive, even though most have ASCII graphics.

When not on the computer, I play the Piano, maybe do some reading, photography, etc...

Lets see what I do here.

Welcome to the community Perry. I'm happy to see a new person join. How did you discover MegaZeux?

I have a rudimentary tutorial series on YouTube.

Hi, I'm RedDragon.

I stubled upon Megazeux back in 2007. As a ZZT user I was amazed by the superior editing capabilities MZX offered, but never had the time to learn it and make some games (it was high school exam time, and then university).

I rediscovered it on an old HD, and interest resurged about making an MZX game.

I'm working on various projects right now: mods of some old games, a full mod of Heretic on GZDoom and a multiplayer level pack for a Doom mod.

I love the username "Perry Steven".

This post may be 4 years old, but I hope you eventually ended up working on an MZX title.
