Never made a journal before, not entirely sure why I decided to do it. I think it's something about wanting people to have at least a tiny bit of anticipation for my game. But on the other hand, I don't want to get anyone's expectations too high. So here I am with my humble creation, telling you all that yes, I am making a game. It's called

-= The Red =-

Posted Image

You're in a small room connecting a much larger, red-grouned stretch of enclosed forest. This is neat...are you...dreaming?

Maybe.

The object of the game is to guide your character through The Red and find out where you are, but more importantly, who you are.

----------

Note the ZZT-like graphics. I've become rather affectionate toward this style, and have nearly finished an other game with the same look. This game will hopefully spark some imagination in you, seeing how it's primarily story, but I also want to give you some fun with gameplay. Give me suggestions, tell me what you think. I never was good at taking advice pertaining to art, if that's what this is, but I'm gonna listen if you say something.

So anyway, I would say the game is maybe, uhm, 1/3 finished? With this sort of game, once I finish the board and a few things in it, I'm plugging along-- no complicated engines or anything. Just trying to make a consistent story. Hope Wervyn approves : )

Genre of Game: eerie/adventure/horror/drama

Well the story sounds like it might be interesting. And minimalist gameplay is cool. One suggestion about the graphics though: Add a little more variety. Maybe some dithering on the walls and floor and put some decorative stuff around.

Thankya thankya thankya, now.. will there be updates for this? I dunno, it'll probably turn out that some day I'll just go crazy on it and finish it that night then release it even later in the night when I'm dead tired.

Completed another 5 boards. The way the story's unfolding, I'm probably not quite 1/2 in progress yet.

A little something to get you excited-- this game goes pretty much anywhere... which includes sections of the game where you get to play as a side character, as shown:

As it is a story, the game also hosts a number of revealing flashbacks.

Edit: Playable flashbacks.

Angularity is good.

X window system in 1bit mode (b&w) is ENTIRELY dithered. Window decorations, styles, webpages, icons, wallpaper, everything. The whole screen is all dither.

<@Tixus> But it failed to send me back in time, and I was disappointed.
<Insidious> Tixus accidentally microwaved the 80s

I knew this had to come out some time or other..

Nah, it wasn't really Forrester inspired, I don't think, more inspired by all those old ZZT games like Jamie's Underground Remix and such. Just because there's a strange plot and ZZT smiley doesn't mean...

Here's a revealing flashback about one of the characters.

Posted Image

This screenshot was taken just moments before he got into a big school fight and knocked the heck out of another kid.

So er, yeah, I made some progress in the game. Right now I'm sort of trying to organize how the game's story will unfold.
